Artist's Statement and Mission

The images created recently and in the last five years are considered
to be a complete turn around to the works created in the late eighties and
early nineties.  Fifteen years ago I worked strictly with black and
white infrared film photographing a series of figure studies in both manmade and
natural environments.  The purpose of that first project entitled
"Shadow Play" was to show a stark contrast between the subject and their
surroundings.  The nude form along with its skin texture and contoured
shape against the environment made the subject stand out with a very
sharp contrast.  Using the infrared film added another height of drama
by it's use of light and the contrasting shadows that it creates.  The completed
work would invoke a thought process by making the viewer think not of how
the photographer pulled off the shot but of the ominous feelings of what
might lurk in the shadows or by the sharp lines and shapes and their
danger to the subject.

The works completed in the last five years and in line to be, take
a full stride away from my first projects.  My subjects are still objects of
deep beauty, but now are recorded by using traditional color film
and then digitally manipulated to various degrees to come up with the
final image.  Living in South Florida and traveling extensively has given
me an endless supply of tropical botanical subjects.  I concentrate
on close-up and very often extreme macro photography to show the makeup
of what many people do not see or take for granted.  I work with the parts
that make up the whole.  I very seldom stray from the natural
colors of a subject although I will enhance their appearance and
saturation to instill a vivid interpretation.  By using various types of
graphic software, I will even try to interpret texture which can stand
alone in many of my pieces.

Digital manipulation is secondary in my work, "...you must have a strong
foundation and only then can you continue to achieve the final outcome".

My work may resemble paintings or drawings; but under
no circumstances do I claim them to be anything other than,
"...digitally manipulated photographic images created with various
software tools to interpret shape, color and texture".
